The Cards We're Dealt (pt. 2)
Practical Steps to Focus on What You Can Control and Thrive Creatively
“Circumstances do not make the man; they merely reveal him to himself.”
Epictetus

In my post yesterday, we explored the above quote from Stoic philosopher, Epictetus. We talked about how, as creatives, it’s easy to feel defined by what happens around us - but the truth is, we get to choose how we respond. That choice, that focus on what we can control, is where our real power lies.
So how do you actually live that every day? How do you stop letting the noise distract you and start channeling your energy into what truly matters? Here are some practical steps that can help you stay grounded and keep your creative momentum alive:
Know What’s In Your Circle of Control
Take a moment to list what’s worrying you right now. Then, separate those worries into two groups: things you can influence and things you can’t. Spoiler alert: the second list (the can't’s) is often bigger than we realize. The magic happens when you put your focus, time, and energy into that first list (the can’s). I have found this simple exercise eye-opening and liberating.Let Go on Purpose
For everything outside your control, practice consciously releasing it. Whether it’s through a few deep breaths, a journaling exercise, or simply telling yourself, “This isn’t mine to fix right now,” let those distractions fade. Epictetus knew this well - what happens to us reveals who we are, but it doesn’t have to define us. Letting go isn’t about giving up; it’s about freeing your mind and energy to create.Create Small, Consistent Daily Habits
Remember the story from our last post? When life felt overwhelming, I committed to just 15 minutes of creative work a day. That small, simple habit became my anchor. Find your version of that - whether 10 minutes of sketching, writing a paragraph, painting, or brainstorming ideas - and show up for yourself daily. The steady rhythm builds momentum and helps you stay connected to your creative purpose even when distractions loom large.Celebrate Every Win
Progress isn’t only about big milestones. Celebrate every small win - finishing a scene, nailing a sketch, sending a query. These victories fuel motivation and remind you that you’re moving forward. Keeping a “win journal” can be a powerful way to see how far you’ve come and build confidence for what’s next.Return to Familiar Comforts to Recharge
Sometimes, the best way to focus is to reset. Lean into familiar creative works or routines that soothe your spirit - whether that’s rewatching a favorite show, rereading a beloved book, or revisiting your earliest sketches. This practice, like Adele’s habit of listening to music from her past during tough times, grounds you and replenishes your creative energy.1Reflect and Realign Regularly
Periodically revisit your lists and goals. Notice if you’re slipping into worrying about uncontrollable things or perfectionism. Realign your focus to your circle of control and your creative priorities. This ongoing awareness keeps you agile and centered.
Why All This Matters
By focusing your energy on what you can control, you reclaim your creative power. You stop being a passive observer of circumstance and become an active creator of your journey. This mindset, championed by Epictetus centuries ago and embraced by modern creatives today, is a foundation for sustainable creativity and peace of mind.
TODAY’s CHALLENGE:
Grab a notebook or open a fresh document and make two lists:
Things you can control in your creative life right now
Things you cannot control but have been worrying about
Choose one item from the “can control” list and commit to one small action today that pushes it forward - even if it’s just for 15 minutes. Then, write down one phrase or mantra to remind yourself to let go of one uncontrollable worry. Repeat it whenever your mind wanders.
This simple exercise can shift your mindset and energy, helping you create from a place of strength and clarity.
Remember, your creativity thrives when your energy flows where it truly matters. Own your power - one focused step at a time. That’s how you truly learn to deal with the cards you’re dealt.
